Advice NI calls for return of a functioning Assembly

Ahead of widespread strike action and unprecedented pressure on public services, Advice NI calls for return of a functioning Assembly with local politicians prioritising spending and supporting our most vulnerable people.

Speaking about the current industrial action and pressures facing our public services, Bob Stronge, Advice NI CEO said:

"Workers across all sectors, including the charitable and independent advice sector, have gone above and beyond to ensure people have been supported through Covid, through the current Cost of Living Crisis and through ongoing reforms and changes to Social Security; such as the Move to Universal Credit.

Advice NI has been to the fore in recognising the need to respect and value the contribution of staff in these difficult and challenging times.

We have called out the inadequate budget settlement for NI, resulting in cuts to vital services. In the area of social security cuts to Discretionary Support are affecting vulnerable, low-income households in crisis situations. We are also very aware that important initiatives are stalled pending a return of the Assembly, including movement on an Anti-Poverty Strategy and implementation of recommendations to improve our welfare mitigations package.

We understand that significant progress has been made in discussions with Government and that a £3.3bn financial package has been made available reliant upon the restoration of the Executive, including funding for public sector pay increases and an overspend write-off. However much more will be needed if we are to tackle poverty and make our public services fit for purpose.

Advice NI is calling for an adequate, sustainable financial settlement and the return of a functioning Assembly with local politicians in place to make decisions and prioritise spending and support for our most vulnerable people."
