Advice NI Members' Day - GDPR

GDPR: Protecting our clients

Our recent member’s day hosted by Michael Lyttle in the Apex Living Centre located in Derry focused on the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into effect on the 25th May 2018.

The GDPR forms part of the data protection regime in the UK, together with the new Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA 2018). The main provisions of this apply, like the GDPR, from 25 May 2018.

Our members have day-to-day responsibility for data protection so our event was organised to help our members understand the provisions within GDPR and comply with its requirements. Advice agencies frequently hold sensitive information about individuals, staff, volunteers and donors. The damage that could be caused to public trust and confidence in your organisation, and in the sector as a whole is huge, if sensitive information is misused.

Our Head of ICT Patricia Donald gave our members an overview of what steps Advice NI have taken to comply with GDPR Regulations. Many of the GDPR’s main concepts and principles are much the same as those in the current DPA, so if you are complying properly with the current law then most of your approach to compliance will remain valid under the GDPR, and can be the starting point to build from. However, there are new elements and significant enhancements, so you will have to do some things for the first time and some things differently.

We also had two guest speakers in attendance, Chris Tansey of Advice UK and Bob Harper from NICVA.

In preparation for GDPR, Chris took our members through the key GDPR compliance issues that advice services should be aware of. Bob Harper then went on to cover the principles of data protection, and how our members can protect their clients.

Advice NI Policy Forum

The day ended with our first Policy forum focusing on Universal Credit and GDPR. Our members had an excellent opportunity to meet an Apex client currently in receipt of Universal Credit and discuss the claimant journey.

We are in the process of developing a ‘GDPR Toolkit’ and will distribute to our members as soon as possible.
